The Aston Villa football club was founded in 174 and plays in Aston, Birmingham in the English Premier League. Aston Villa, also known as the Villans has played at their current home ground, Villa Park, since 1897. They were one of the founding members of both the Football League and the Premier League. One of the oldest and most successful clubs in English football they have won the First Division Championship seven times, the FA Cup seven times, the 81-82 European League, which is currently the UEFA Champions League. This is probably the most prestigious trophy in all of European football.
While these facts are what the team is most proud of, there have been many small and interesting things throughout their history that truly make TheVillans one of the most colourful and respected teams around the world. A part of this is their classic rivalry with Birmingham City. Matches between the two, known as the Birmingham derby, have been going on since 1879.
The club started off play well in the early years earning their first FA Cup in 1887 under the guidance of Archibald Hunter. Archie was one of the first true stars of the game of football. Too many he is described as the greatest captain to ever don a claret shirt. He received the amazing honour of being selected as one of the 100 legends of English football in 1998. Tragically he suffered a heart attack during a match in 1890 and never fully recovered. He never played again and died 4 years later at the age of 35. His time as captain was some of the most successful in the history of the team.
Another great player that came just after Archie’s time was Joe Bache. Joe was a prolific scored 185 goals with a remarkable 8 career hat tricks. During his day he was regarded as the most accomplished inside left playing anywhere. With Albert Hall, Joe Bache was a part of the most dominant left wing in all of football.
Tom Pongo Waring could have been the greatest goal scorer ever to play for the Villans, and for one year there was no doubt. In 1930-31 Aston Villa broke the Football Leagues record for goals in a season by netting 128 in 42 matches. Waring led the way for this prolific offense scoring a club record 49. His nickname, Pongo, came from a famous cartoon of the day. When he finished his career he had 243 league goals in 363 matches, with 167 of those goals coming with Villa. His charming personality was remembered for years after he stopped playing for Villa.
Another unique honour that was won by an Aston Villa player was earned by Andy Gray. In 1977-78 he was the first player ever to win the PFA Young Player of the Year award and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award. While his career after that was up and down, for one magical season he managed to do what no one up to that point had done, and only one person has been able to accomplish since then.
These are only some of the many great players that have had a part in making the history of the Aston Villas. There are many others that have come down the pipe to help form the team into the great squad that it is today and without them the many things the team has accomplished would not be possible.
